Make a photo collage in your browser

Lightframes puts 1 to 9 photos on a slide with ready-made layouts, adjustable borders and Instagram-ready sizes, and exports one JPEG per slide. It's free, needs no account and your photos stay on your device.

Free, no account, nothing uploaded

How to do it

  1. Open your photos

Open the editor, click Open photos and add the pictures for the collage. Any edits you make in the editor are used in the collage.

  2. Switch to Collage mode

Click Collage in the toolbar. Make sure Collage, not Carousel, is selected in the Format switch.

  3. Choose a size and layout

Under Size, pick an aspect such as 4:5 or 9:16. Under Layout, set how many Photos the slide holds (1 to 9) and click a layout.

  4. Place and frame the photos

Drag photos in from the list or use Fill empty. Drag inside a cell to reframe, scroll or use Zoom to zoom, and drop a photo on another cell to swap them.

  5. Style and export

Adjust the Border width, colour and Outer edge, add more slides if you need them, then click Export collage.

What the collage maker is for

The collage maker in Lightframes arranges several photos on one image in a clean grid, with even gaps between them. Use it for a trip recap, a before-and-after, a product set, a story post with a handful of moments, or a multi-slide Instagram post where each slide is its own little grid.

It lives inside the photo editor, so the photos in your collage are the developed versions, not the raw originals. Edit a set with a preset, fix a few spots, and the collage uses all of it without exporting each photo first.

How it works and what happens to your photos

The collage is built and exported entirely in your browser; your photos never leave your device. When you export, Lightframes develops each photo with its edits at the resolution its cell actually needs, draws every slide at full size and saves it as a JPEG. Cell edges are snapped to whole pixels, so neighbouring photos never leave a thin seam.

There’s no account and no upload, and once the app is loaded, collage also works offline.

Sizes

All slides in a collage share one size, set under Size:

Aspect Name Pixels
9:16 Story 1080 × 1920
3:4 Tall 1080 × 1440
4:5 Portrait (default) 1080 × 1350
1:1 Square 1080 × 1080
4:3 Classic 1440 × 1080
3:2 Photo 1620 × 1080
16:9 Widescreen 1920 × 1080
1.91:1 Landscape 1080 × 566

Layouts and controls

Under Layout, choose how many Photos the current slide holds, from 1 to 9, and then one of the layouts for that number. There are 40 in total, for example:

  • 2 photos: Side by side, Stacked, Wide left, Tall top.
  • 3 photos: Big left, Big right, Big top, Big bottom, Three columns, Three rows, Wide middle.
  • 4 photos: Grid, Big left/right/top/bottom, Four columns, Four rows, Mosaic.
  • 5 photos: Two over three, Three over two, Pinwheel and more.
  • 6 to 9 photos: column and row grids, Big corner, Big middle, a 3 × 3 Grid and others.

Other controls:

  • Border: turn it on or off, set the Width (0.5 to 6% of the slide width, 1.5% by default), pick a colour from the swatches or any custom colour, and choose whether the Outer edge is framed too.
  • Photo: select a cell to set its Zoom (100 to 400%), Reset framing or Remove the photo.
  • Fill empty: drops photos that aren’t in the collage yet into the empty cells.
  • Slides: add a slide, duplicate it, move it left or right, or delete it, up to 20 slides.

If you open more than nine photos, Lightframes starts you off with grids of four per slide; with nine or fewer, it puts them all on one slide.

Tips

  • Pick the size first. Changing the aspect later changes every cell’s shape, so framing may need a touch-up.
  • Use thin borders for a modern look, or turn borders off for a tight mosaic. White or cream borders give a classic print look; black suits night and city shots.
  • Mix orientations sensibly. Put portrait photos in tall cells and landscapes in wide ones to avoid heavy crops.
  • Give the first slide a strong lead photo in multi-slide posts, since it’s the one shown in the feed.
  • Want one image running across slides? That’s the Instagram carousel maker, in the same mode.

Limitations

Collages are exported as JPEG only, at the fixed sizes above. There’s no text, stickers or free-form placement: photos sit in layout cells (the carousel mode allows free placement). Your photos and edits are restored after a reload, but the collage layout itself is not, so export before you close the tab. For other questions, see the FAQ or open the editor.

Questions

Is this collage maker free and without a watermark?

Yes. Lightframes is free and open source, needs no account and adds no watermark to your collages. It runs in your browser, so there are no export limits.

How many photos can I put in a collage?

Each slide holds 1 to 9 photos, with between one and eight layouts for each count. A post can have up to 20 slides, each with its own layout.

What sizes can I export a collage in?

There are eight sizes: 9:16 (1080 × 1920), 3:4 (1080 × 1440), 4:5 (1080 × 1350), 1:1 (1080 × 1080), 4:3 (1440 × 1080), 3:2 (1620 × 1080), 16:9 (1920 × 1080) and 1.91:1 (1080 × 566). Every slide in a post uses the same size, and each is exported as a JPEG.

Are my photos uploaded to make the collage?

No. The collage is laid out and rendered inside your browser, and the finished JPEG files are saved straight to your device. Your photos are not sent to a server.

Can I edit the photos before putting them in a collage?

Yes. The collage uses each photo with the edits you made in the editor, including crop, colour, presets and retouching. Change an edit and the collage picks it up.
